Race and Media Practice Test

Symbolic annihilation describes how media can quietly erase or reduce a social group by underrepresenting them or portraying them in surface-level, stereotypical ways. This matters because what media shows—or doesn’t show—shapes our sense of who belongs in society and which roles are seen as normal. When a group is consistently invisible or limited to narrow, negative portrayals, audiences come to view them as less real or less deserving of complex, human treatment. Over time, this fosters stereotypes and social invisibility, making it harder for people in that group to be seen as full participants in everyday life or in public life.

For example, when a minority is rarely seen in positions of authority on news and drama, or is repeatedly depicted through limiting stereotypes (such as always being criminals, or only associated with poverty or danger), the public absorbs a skewed sense of that group’s place in society. In contrast, more diverse, nuanced, and frequent representation helps counter these false ideas by showing people in a wide range of roles and experiences.

The other options describe different ideas that don’t capture the mechanism of symbolic annihilation: endorsing a political agenda, measuring audience engagement, or imposing an ethical duty to represent more people. They miss the core process of how underrepresentation and trivialization in media shape perception and social reality.
